From Village Roots to National Dreams: Arach Phiona’s Inspiring Rise to Uganda’s U17 Squad

From the quiet setting of Amilo Village in Ibuje Sub-County, Apac District, to the national stage, Arach Phiona’s journey is a powerful story of resilience, patience, and determination.

Phiona is among the talented young players representing Uganda in the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualification campaign, where the national team faces Zimbabwe in a crucial fixture. Her rise to this level reflects years of persistence, sacrifice, and an unwavering passion for football.

Her story began in school at St. Katherine Girls in Boroboro, Lira, where she first discovered and nurtured her love for the game through school competitions. It was here that her potential started to show, earning her recognition as a promising young talent.

She later joined Rapha Girls Secondary School, a known hub for nurturing girls’ football talent. However, her journey was not without challenges. At one point, Phiona made the difficult decision to pause her football career to focus on her Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations. This break, though necessary, tested her commitment to the sport.

After completing her O-Level studies, she resumed her academic journey at Rines Secondary School in Wakiso District for A-Level. It was during this period that her football career reignited, leading her to competitive club football. Her dedication and growth eventually earned her a place in the FUFA Women Super League, where she currently continues to develop and compete at a high level.

Now wearing the national colors, Phiona stands as a symbol of hope and inspiration for many young girls in Northern Uganda and beyond. Her journey highlights the importance of balancing education and sports, while also proving that setbacks can be stepping stones to greater achievements.

As Uganda battles for a place at the U17 Women’s World Cup, all eyes will be on emerging talents like Arach Phiona—players whose stories go far beyond the pitch, carrying the dreams of their communities with them.

Her rise is not just a personal victory, but a testament to the growing impact of grassroots football in shaping the future of the game in Uganda.
